A Survey of Self-optimization Approaches for Heterogeneous Networks

  With the increasing requirements of mobile communication data traffic and the fact that variety of wireless networks coexist in a given area, network convergence is regarded as the development tendency of modem and future wireless communication, for which serf-organization provides a promising solution to alleviate the upgrading capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenditures (OPEX).Heterogeneous network is an inevitable phase of the process of the network convergence.Combining variety of technologies together gives us more choices and enables us to choose the best one, but it also introduces some extra complexity for the network operator to improve the network performance.Self-optimization is a decentralized approach to adapt the varying environmental circumstances dynamically without centralized control or human intervention.In this article, we discuss the categorizations of heterogeneous networks such as convergence of different network types,coexistence of multiple radio access technologies and multiple cell formats.The fundamentals of self-optimization are introduced then.We also enhance the self-optimization model in heterogeneous networks to avoid Ping-Pong effect by adding a performance gain threshold.Self-optimization approaches including dynamic mobile access network selection, spectrum resource allocation and power control for heterogeneous networks are surveyed.Possible methodologies used to achieve self-optimization are also summarized.
