Text, Image, and Reality: Dong Qichang”s (1555-1636) Studio Landscape for a Deposed Military Guard

In 1619, the literati-artist Dong Qichang (Fig.2a) created a handscroll painting and two poetic inscriptions to tell the story of his friend Liu Chengxi (Fig.2b), whose official title wasjinwu or Embroidered-Uniform Guard.Accordingly, the name of the painting was Reading in the Niu Mountainfor Liu Jinwu (Fig.3).Both accompanying poems have remained unstudied but they can be found in Dong”s anthologies.Intriguingly, although Dong”s two inscriptions generally praise Liu”s ancestors, there are a few lines that show a troubled history between Liu and the Donglin factional strife that took place between the 1590s and 1620s.The contrast between the positive and negative images of Liu evoked by the painting and inscriptions causes a tension between the real and the rendered, the visual harmony and textual contradiction. In this talk, what is known in film study as ”textual-visual dissonance” will provide a fresh insight to look at Dong”s inscriptions on his own painting.
