Image and Text Relations in Hao Paintings
The hao painting (別號圖) is a picture that illustrates the meaning of someone”s biehao(別號), a sobriquet.The hao painting first appeared in the 14th century and flourished during the late 15th and early 16th century in Jiangnan(江南) region.Despite such a short period of its popularity, hitherto over 40 paintings are identified as hao paintings and among them included a masterpiece such as Tang Yin (唐寅, 1470-1524)”s Brewing Tea (事茗圖).1 The eminent collector and connoisseur of the late Ming, Zhang Chou(張丑, 1577-1643), also mentioned that while the paintings of houses and pavilions began to be painted in the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368),paintings of biehao began to be produced in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
