Effect of erbium on homogenization in an Al-Cu-Mg alloy
Effect of rare-earth erbium addition on homogenization in an Al-Cu-Mg alloy has been systematically evaluated by employing optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The microstructures of the as-cast Al-Cu-Mg-Er alloy are identified as Al2Cu phase (θ phase), Al2CuMg phase (S phase) and Al8Cu4Er phase. There is nearly no change for the ternary Al8Cu4Er phase during the homogenization treatment heated at 480℃.The phase transformation from primary lamellar eutectic structure (θ and S phases) to round shape S phase is detected, and the ripening and coalescence occur on the S phase. In addition, the overburnt temperature of the Al-Cu-Mg-Er alloy is 490℃ and the suitable homogenization treatment is 480℃ x 36h, which is good consistent with the results of homogenizing kinetic analysis.
