Evolution of microstructures and textures in AZ80 alloy deformed by multi-pass hot rolling

Homogenized AZ80 alloys were subjected to multi-pass hot rolling with a small thickness reduction per pass, and the total reduction ratios were 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%, respectively.Microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the plates have been investigated. The results indicate that the deformation twins are promoted during small thickness reduction rolling process, and the twin boundaries subdivide the deformed grains into pieces. The grains are gradually refined with the transformation of twin boundaries into grain boundaries.Al elements enrich at the twin boundaries to form banded enriched areas, and the Al-content in the enriched area is increased with the increasing of deformation until some granular β-Mg17Al12 phases precipitate.Furthermore, the as-rolled specimens exhibit (0001)//ND basal texture, and the texture is changed from a single peak to double peaks with the increasing of deformation.Tensile tests indicate that the mechanical properties in transverse direction (TD) are higher than that in rolling direction (RD) for each as-rolled specimen due to the formation of texture.
