Cryptosporidium Research in China Achievements, Challenges, and Opportunities

Introduction Cryptosporidiosis is a major cause of diarrhea and enteric disease in humans and farm animals. It has long been known as a primary cause of watery diarrhea in pre-weaned calves and lambs, responsible for significant morbidity and mortality (Blanchard,2012;Cho et al.,2013;Holland,1990;Meganck et al.,2014;Nacrii et al.,1999).Recent human studies have also implicated cryptosporidiosis as the second most important cause for moderate-to-severe diarrhea in young children in developing countries (Kotloff et al.,2013;Platts-Mills et al.,2015).In some animals such as birds, some Cryptosporidium species can cause respiratory and renal infections, resulting in high mortality (Santin,2013).In zoo and pet snakes,C serpentis infection is chronic and often fatal (Paiva et al.,2013).Several Cryptosporidium species from mammals and birds are important zoonotic pathogens, causing animal contact-associated or waterborne and foodborne outbreaks of human cryptosporidiosis, especially in industrialized nations (Caceio and Chalmers,2016).
