DSM”s Creep Resistant HPDC Alloys Portfolio
In the last decade significant progress in weight reduction has been made in the transportation industry.Magnesium alloys are widely being used in safety related parts such as steering wheels, instrumental panels, brackets etc.On the other hand until recently, the utilization of magnesium alloys in drivetrain components was not fully implemented due to several reasons mainly associated with increased cost of magnesium alloys compared to aluminum alloys and, to great extent, with lack of suitable HPDC magnesium alloys having technological and service characteristics that match closely those of HPDC aluminum alloys.The present paper addresses the results of an extensive research carried out by DSM”s engineers on the development of advanced creep resistant magnesium alloys for high pressure die casting process and high-performance sandcasting alloys suitable for prototyping and special applications.The metallurgical principles underlying superior performance of new alloys are disclosed and discussed.
