Fast generation technology of flowering Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L.ssp.chinensis var.utilis Tsen et Lee)
The main critical factors restricting the progress in plant breeding and genetic studies is the time required in generating desired pure line populations.Flowering Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L.ssp.chinensis var.utilis Tsen et Lee) is a variant of Chinese cabbage and one of the most popular vegetables in southern China.Double Haploid (DH) population has not been established due to technical difficulties.We developed a procedure that can advance up to seven generations of flowering Chinese cabbage per annum, allowing the production of pure line populations in a year.Five generations per annum were achieved using the soil method and seven generations per annum were achieved using the embryo culture plus soil method.This fast generation procedures bypass the obstacles in constructing DH of flowering Chinese cabbage and can be used in producing recombinant inbred lines and near isogenic lines.Its wider adoption could facilitate plant breeding and biological studies in the plant.
