A novel approach for manufacturing carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/Mg by pre-coating-rolling powders process

A novel pre-coating-rolling (C-R) powders process to fabricate CNT-reinforced magnesium (Mg) matrix composite was investigated via powder metallurgy in this study.Mg powders were firstly coated with dispersed CNTs, followed by rolling process which can improve surface area and geometric compatibility with the CNTs, and coated again with dispersed CNTs.The C-R process can achieve increased CNTs addition in CNTs/ Mg composites with largely improved mechanical properties. In addition, the C-R process reduced the intensity ratio of ID/IG, which indicates the CNT structures were not seriously destroyed by the C-R process.According to the grain size of pure Mg without rolling process and C-R CNTs/Mg composites, it can be clearly found the enhancement effect of CNTs.Compared with pure Mg by rolling, the tensile yield strength and compressive yield strength of C-R CNTs/Mg composites exhibited an increase of 17.5% and 32.1%, respectively.
