Effect of cooling rate on microstructure and grain refining efficiency of in situ CeB6/Al inoculant in aluminum
An in situ CeB6/Al inoculant was fabricated by arc melting technique and treated by melt-spinning at different cooling rates to improve its grain refining efficiency on pure aluminum. It has been found that the refractory CeB6 phase can be synthetic in Al melt and the size of CeB6 particles can be significantly reduced by applying different rotating speed of copper roller during melt-spinning.As a result, the CeB6 particles in ribbons has been reduced to ~500 nm at a high cooling rates of about 1.97x 107 K/s.The grain size of pure aluminum after inoculation can be refined to about 100 μm.The improved grain refinement of the in situ CeB6/Al inoculant can be attributed to the combining effect of nano-sized refiner particles and the excellent crystallography matching of CeB6 and Al.
