A Quantitative Review of the Effects of Mulch on Wheat Yield and WUE in China Using Meta-analysis

In recent years, rapid economic development and population growth have increased the consumption of water to meet the additional demand for food, intensifying the competition for water among agriculture, industry and the environment. The limited water resources in China have compelled the farming community to implement water-saving measures.Mulching has been proven to be one of the most effective methods to reduce evapotranspiration and increase water use efficiency. To develop sustainable crop production, researchers have studied the relationship among evapotranspiration, grain yield, and WUE in mulching conditions. However, the reported effects of mulching often differ and sometimes contradict among studies, likely due to differences in the climatic conditions, soil characteristics, crop species, and also water and N input levels.
