Using protein mass spectrometry for investigating diversity in nature
Mass spectrometry based proteomics has gained increasing application for investigation of the role of proteins and peptides in living organisms. However, proteomics rely on the presence of the sequences of the proteins of interest in databases such as the UniProt or the NCBI database. In spite of the fact that information about an increasing number of organisms is available in these databases, data for a majority of organisms are not there.
