A new perspective to understand ammonia removal: catalytic oxidation of manganese oxides

The high concentration of ammonia in underground and surface water has become a great public health threat. As efficient method for ammonia removal, filtration has been extensively studied, showing the advantages of low cost, easy operation and no secondary pollution.Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and ammonia-oxidizing archaea has long been recognized as the major contributors for the ammonia removal by filters”1”.However, this classical recognition perhaps needs reconsidered because we discovered that the catalysis of manganese oxide (MnOx) played a key role for ammonia oxidation in filter.
