How structures form-a fundamental new approach
By decreasing the temperature, a cloud of atoms condenses to a liquid and at even lower temperature forms a crystal, with new properties arising at each step.Although extremely important, the underlying processes are far from being really understood but, cannot be explained by properties of the individual elements alone.Their cooperative actions have to be accounted too and are of, at least, equal importance as local, few-particle interactions alone.Quantum chemistry, statistical physics, as well as thermodynamics all play an indispensable role but, each of them is unable to solve the problem alone.
