Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in Non-stoichiometric Sn1-xMn1.1xTe Alloys

  The thermoelectric properties of non-stoichiometric Sn1-xMn1.1xTe alloys with heavy Mn content x =0.00, 0.05, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12 and 0.15 were investigated in this work.The samples were prepared through vaccum melting followed by quenching and spark plasma sintering approach The X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that samples doping with higher Mn comprise a major phase SnTe with NaCl-type structure and a secondary phase MnTe with NiAs-type structure.Owing to relatively high solubility of Mn in SnTe, effective enhancement on thermopower and significant suppression on thermal phonons can be achieved.Electrical and thermal properties can be simultaneous optimized in SnTe system resulting in a maximum ZT value of 1.21 for Sn0.9Mn0.11Te at 873K.
