Interfacing Loudspeakers and Rooms
The acoustic properties of the listening room and the choice of both loudspeaker position and listening position have a determining impact on the experienced performance of a loudspeaker. Many different systems for adapting a loudspeaker to its acoustic environment have been presented based on different methods for measuring/determining the perceived impact of changing the listening room and/or positions of loudspeaker and listener. This paper presents room adaptation systems based on measuring acoustic key parameters both at the loudspeaker position, the listening position and throughout the listening room. This paper also talks about the central element of choosing the target function for the compensation system as this is a key to a succesfull room adaptation system. Both theoretical and actual measured data are presented to illustrate how the listening room in fact interacts with a loudspeaker in different rooms and how the presented room adaptation systems are able to counteract this.
