Smart Loudspeaker Systems

Digital signal processing (DSP) combined with efficient amplification and new sensing techniques gives new possibilities to overcome the limitations of passive transducers to generate smart loudspeaker systems which produce more acoustical output at higher quality while using less size, weight, cost and energy. This paper gives an overview of adaptive nonlinear control which compensates for linear and nonlinear distortion, stabilizes the voice coil position and protects the transducer against thermal and mechanical overload. The control technique is based on nonlinear lumped parameter modeling and identifies all parameters and state variables of the model adaptively by monitoring voltage and current at the loudspeaker terminals.Furthermore, this paper discusses the consequences for passive transducer design, power amplification and system integration.
