State of the Art of New Technologies for Electromagnetic Metallurgy Based on Clean Steel Production

The development and promotion of clean steel technology is one of the hot issues and it has important applications in steel industry, although there are some difficulties should be resolved.New generation of electromagnetic metallurgical technologies could dramatically improve steel cleanliness,so as to achieve the purpose of improving the quality of steel and increasing productivity. In this paper, two representative technologies are introduced. One is an electromagnetic induction-controlled automated steel-teeming,the other one is a technology of electromagnetic swirling flow in the submerged entry nozzle(SEN).The basic idea of the first one is using an induction coil located in the nozzle brick to melt part or all of the new well-packing material(i.e.,Fe-C alloy with a similar composition of molten steel),which replaces the conventional nozzle sand, and to obtain smooth automated steel teeming. In the latter technology,a rotating electromagnetic field is set up around the SEN to induce swirling flow in it by the Lorentz force without contact with the steel. This technology could avoid nozzle clogging, and has great effect on improving the uniformity and stability of the outlet flow.It could also reduce the meniscus fluctuation, homogenize the distributions of flow and temperature in the mold. The development and promotion of these kind of electromagnetic metallurgical technologies has great significance for the production of clean steel in future.
