Study on New Mold Flux for Heat-Resistant Steel Continuous Casting

In order to restrain the slag-metal interface reaction in the continuous casting process of heat-resistant steel, the new mold fluxes with CaO-Al2O3-Li2O-CeO2 system were proposed. The fundamental properties of the new mold fluxes such as the melting temperature, the viscosity and the crystallization were investigated systematically. It was found that the appropriate content of CeO2 was determined as 5~10wt%,the melting temperature show good stability with increasing CeO2,indicating that the mold fluxes could show steady smelting properties after continuously absorbing inclusions containing cerium in the continuous casting process.CeO2 show significantly good properties of decreasing the viscosity and restraining the crystallization process. After adding CeO2,the crystalline phases were shifted from CaO and LiAlO2 to CaCeAlO4 and LiAlO2,the precipitation of CaO in the crystallization process was restrained. With a content of less than 14wt%,Li2O can reduce the melting temperature and viscosities before the breaking point obviously, but the fluxing action of Li2O became ineffective when its content exceeded 14wt%.The results hold great theoretical significance for developing mold fluxes for heat-resistant steel.
