Effect of CaO/SiO2 Mass Ratio on the Precipitation Behavior of Spinel Phase in Stainless Steel Slag

In the present work, synthetic samples of CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-FeO-Cr2O3slagwere obtained to analyze the effect of CaO/SiO2 mass ratioon the precipitation of spinel phase. The samples were heated to 1600°C for melting completely, and then slowly cooled to 1300°Cfor holding 30min beforequenching in water. The phases composition and precipitation behavior of spinel phasewere analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscope-energydispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS).The law of conservation of mass and linear least square equation were used to calculate the mineral phase proportion in stainless steel slag. The leaching test was conducted for pointing out the chromium stability in different CaO/SiO2 ratio slags. The results showed that Cr was mainly enriched in spinel phase and liquid phase.Slag composition with CaO/SiO2=1.5 was beneficial to improve theprecipitation of spinel phase and reduce the chromium leaching amount.HigherCaO/SiO2 ratioshould be avoided, which could lead to the formation of leachable chromium containing periclase phase and high chromium leaching. The average grain size of spinel phase was found to increase with decreasing CaO/SiO2 ratio.
