An Overview of Biomass Utilization in Ferrous Metallurgy Processes
Concerning over climate change and depletion of fossil energy, iron and steel industry has been facing enormous challenges and great pressure for seeking alternative and renewable energy such as biomass or bioenergy. This paper provides an overview of biomass utilization in ferrous metallurgy processes via the blast furnace(BF)-basic oxygen furnace(BOF)route, direct reduction(DR)-electric arc furnace(EAF)route, and scrap-EAF route. In the BF-BOF processes, biomass can be used as a fuel for iron ore sintering,or as a raw material for the production of bio-coke,and utilized for blast furnace injection. In the DR-EAF processes, direct reduced iron can be produced from iron ore and biomass pellets. In addition, biomass can be utilized in EAF through a cogeneration system. This paper also briefly reviews the environmental performance and biomass strategy of Canadian steel industry.
