COREX(R) - An Answer for Hot Metal Production in a Changing Environment
The COREX(R)Process is a well-established route for the production of hot metal and beside the FINEX(R)Technology the only industrially realized alternative to the blast furnace route.Changes in the technology itself subsequently improved operation of the established COREX(R)plants and process economics.Changes of external factors e.g.general decrease in raw material quality, increase in energy cost and availability of energy(especially natural gas),strict environmental regulations, pressure to lower the investment costs and lower operation cost, make it worth to carefully re-evaluate the COREX(R)technology.Current COREX(R)pre-projects clearly show an increasing demand for the “by-product” COREX(R)export gas for power generation and for the production of DRI.Based on the economic evaluation of different COREX(R)gas based plant concepts, the comparison with the traditional blast furnace route shows that the COREX(R)technology is highly competitive in the challenging iron and steel producing environment.
