Effect of ArcSave(R) on the EAF Process Improvements and Cost Effectiveness in Both Carbon and Stainless Steel Production
Electromagnetic stirring(ArcSave(R))is a potential and reliable solution for improving the EAF process and reducing the operation cost. Two ArcSave systems have been introduced by ABB in 2014.One ArcSave has been installed on a 90 ton spout tapping furnace(SS-EAF)for stainless steel production in Europe and the other installed on a 90 ton EBT furnace(CS-EAF)for carbon steel production in USA.The effect of ArcSave on the EAF process and cost effectiveness has been studied during the hot test period and the resulting performance has been compared based on the 6-month-data without stirring and 6-month-data with ArcSave. In this paper, the detailed information of the investigation results obtained from these two installations will be summarized and presented.ArcSave speeds up the scrap and FeCr melt-down,accelerates the homogenization of the temperature and chemical composition of the steel bath, forces the metal/slag reactions closer to equilibrium state, increases the decarburization rate, and also improve the operation safety, reliability, and productivity.ArcSave reduces the consumption of electric energy,electrode,oxygen,refractory,de-oxidants,and slag builders and increase the scrap yield which makes the electric arc furnace more cost effectiveness.
