Cochlear pressure measurements during infrared irradiation
Nowadays, infrared neuron stimulation(INS)in most of applicationswaspreformed in thermal confinement and the confined area in laser beam would changeits volumeduring INS.For INS in cochlea,it may transmit as an expansion wave long basilar membrane. In this study we both measured pressure level inside cochlea by placing a micro grade pressure sensor in to scala tympani of guinea pigs and distortion product otoacoustic emissions(DPOAEs)in outer canal during laser irradiation. The results showedthe DPOAE in outer ear canal is about 63 dB at the highest laser energy.According to the cochlear reverse transfer function, the inner ear pressure is about 93 dB at the highest laser energy. The mechanism of INS in cochlea is very complex, soan angle-polished fiber was usedto separate the photothermal effects and photomechanical effects. When oriented the optical fiber,CAP amplitudes changed significantly while DPOAE remains the same. Our results reviewed that INS in cochlea does have photomechanical effects, however hair cells in cochlea were not sensitive to this pressure and could be ignored in deafened animal experiments.
