Measuring complex behaviors of local oscillatory network in deep brain oscillations

Objective.Multiple oscillations emerging from the same neuronal substrate construct a local oscillatory network. This local oscillatory network usually exhibit complex behaviors. In order to depict and quantify the network,an approach for assessing rhythm, balancing and coupling behaviors is presented.Approach.Deep brain local field potentials(LFPs)were recorded with implanted electrodes from thirteen patients with neuropathic pain and six patients with dystonic tremor. An integrated method to quantify rhythm, balancing and coupling neural behaviors based upon power spectral analysis, power ratio analysis and power coupling analysis was presented.Independent two-sample t-test was applied to assess the difference of local oscillatory network between two groups.Main results. In pain group, prominent power spectrum at alpha band, power coupling between the high beta and lower frequencies were observed. In dystonic tremor group, prominent power spectra at high beta and alpha bands, power ratio of high beta to alpha and low beta were observed.T-test showed significant power spectra difference at high beta band, power ratio differences at high beta to alpha and low beta, and 30-40 Hz to high beta, power coupling differences at(theta, high beta)and(45-55 Hz,70-80 Hz)between two groups were found.Significance.The proposed quantitative approach can help us to more comprehensively understand the complex behaviors of neural oscillations in neuronal ensembles. This has the potential to study how neural oscillations relate to brain function.
