Initiatives for Disaster-Resilient Urban Housing in Metro Manila

The Philippines is recognized as one of the world”s most vulnerable countries to natural disasters (e.g.,floods, typhoons, volcanoes, earthquakes). Many communities in Metro Manila are particularly vulnerable to floods mainly because they occupy sites that should not have been settled in the first place. The highly urbanized cities in Metro Manila have the daunting task of re-planning and redeveloping built-up areas situated in hazardous locations. The study looks into typical natural hazards present in Metro Manila and provides possible housing proposals that could improve the disaster resiliency of the affected communities.Schemes for clearing of the fault line easement and development of in-city housing are presented as possible solutions to increase the disaster resiliency of communities living near the West Valley Fault. The housing redevelopment proposals should also provide more open space that can be used not only for recreation but also as staging areas for emergency response during disasters.
