Conceptual Integration and Rewriting of the Madwoman in Wide Sargasso Sea
The late 20th century witnessed in English literature the popularity of novels of rewriting history from different perspectives.Wide Sargasso Sea, as one of the examples, rewrites the classical English novel Jane Eyre.Jean Rhys, a female English writer born in Dominica, writes back the story of ”the madwoman in the attic”, Rochester”s first wife, and demonstrates the process that the woman has gradually been driven mad. This paper adopts Conceptual Integration Theory to show that, the integration of the clashing mental spaces on the part of the reader, based upon the images of contradictory senses about ”home”, ”dream”, and ”identity”, can reveal layer by layer how the author portrays the heroine”s mental experience on the one hand and the mystery of craziness of this ”madwoman” on the other.
