Readers” Reconstruction of Persse”s Characterization under Schema Theory
Persse is a character in David Lodge”s masterpiece Small World, most of the studies hold that Persse is the protagonist and the narrative speed in the novel is governed by his actions. However, by revealing readers” construing processes of Persse”s characterization with the help of scheme theory and the prototype of Percival, the paper finds that Persse is the hero in the semantic level;he is the pursuer, the saver but not the real hero in the structural level. The ironic effect is achieved during the processes of reconstructing Persse”s characterization.
