A Discourse Analysis of D.H.Lawrence”s The Prussian Officer
D.H.Lawrence (1885-1930) from Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, is regarded as one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century, who is known for both novels (The Rainbow, Sons and Lovers, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley”s Lover) and short stories (Odour of Chrysanthemums, The Virgin and the Gypsy, The Prussian Officer and Rocking-Horse Winner). This study analyzes The Prussian Officer (1914) by combining Chatman”s (1978) narrative theory and Short”s (1996) discourse structure of fictional prose. The findings are, although the orderly murdered his Captain, readers tend to sympathize with him and regard him as the real victim, considering the mistreatment he got from the Captain, which has been achieved by DISCOURSE, that is, how the story has been told.
