Repression and Redemption in ” In Between the Sheets”: A Psychoanalytic Approach
”In Between the Sheets” is a representative work of McEwan in the era of ”Ian Macabre”.With the development of story, taboo topics such as pedophilia, homosexuality, and incestuous urge are brought to light one by one in the tepid narration. Is this really a pornographic story as many readers and researchers think? If not, what underlies such heterodox desires? To answer these two questions will be helpful to go into the psychology of the characters, understand their behaviors and then interpret the deep meanings hidden under the apparent absurdity and pornography of the plot. This article, taking the whole story ”In Between the Sheets ” as analytical data, resorting to a psychoanalytic approach, especially those parts relating to dreams and the unconscious, explores the characters” repressed desires and the process of their self-redemption, hoping to dig up the positive implication of the story.
