”Idea-Image” and the Stylistic Dimension of Classical Chinese Fiction
In order to legitimize its own status as a literary genre and conform to the Confucian orthodoxy, classical Chinese fiction inherited many features of literariness from poetry and prose essay, of which a major one is the profusion of yixiang, or idea-images.This paper traces the theoretical development of idea-image as a literary term, compares with similar uses in Western literary theory, and explores its role in shaping the stylistic dimension of classical Chinese fiction.
