The Style(s) of a Classic in Translation and Back-Translation
The study of style or styles in literary texts had not explicitly taken the translational perspective into account until very lately;and back-translation, generally assumed as putting a text back to its original language, has attracted even less scholarly attention in translation studies.This paper, taking Jakobson”s ideas as points of departure, discusses several aspects of translation and deals with the style (s) of a literary classic in more than a hundred languages and its back-translation in a recent worldwide project.Focusing on an excerpt of the text back-translated from several languages, the paper displays how some key points in the classic were linguistically and stylistically dealt with by the original translators into their own languages and how translations of translations were done.It proposes that the enterprise of back-translating can take a literary classic as an object of linguistic and stylistic reflection and literary appreciation;it not only brings subtle issues of stylistic concern to the fore, but also serves as a practical approach to translation studies from linguistic and stylistic perspectives.
