Characterizing metabolite profiles and biomarkers of cerebral infarction using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and random forests

Cerebral infarction (CI) is brain dysfunction which is one of the most common cardiovascular disease.Till now, the disease pathogenesis is complex and still unclear.Metabolic profiling is a great tool in metabolism research which can discover potential biomarkers. Thus, it has high value on pathophysiological mechanism illumination of CI.In this study, 38 healthy controls and 38 CI patients, were employed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to characterize metabolite profiles and disturbances and find potential biomarkers of CI.Random forests (RF), a supervised multivariate statistical method, was established for classification model. As the results show: (1) 34 endogenous metabolites were found in serums;(2) three groups including healthy control (HC), cerebral infarction (CI) and quality control (QC) were totally srparated by RF;(3) L-Lysine, Octadecanoic acid, L-Tyrosine and Lactic acid were detected as potential biomarkers for CI.
