Comparison study of Arterial Spin Labeling and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy
Objective: To compare the diagnostic value of arterial spin labeling (ASL) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in newborns with Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).Methods: Fifty-four full-term newborn infants with HIE were divided into three degrees based on their clinical diagnosis, examined by 3.0T superconducting MRI scanner with conventional MRI, ASL and 1HMRS.The signal intensity values of ASL and peaks values of MRS in the region of interest of the brain were quantitatively measured and compared. Results: The signal intensity values of FAIR images in bilateral gray, white matter and basal ganglia were 154.51 ±410.25, 70.29± 11.71 and 203.27± 11.32 respectively. There was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) of the signal intensity value of gray matter and basal ganglia and no statistically significant difference (P>0.05) of white matter compared with the control group.NAA peak decreased in 42 newborns and Cr peak decreased in 31 newborns.Increased Lac peak was detected in 48 newborns. There were 52 newborns with MRS abnormality and 49 newborns with FAIR abnormality, and there was no significant difference between these two methods. Conclusion: ASL and MRS both can assess HIE and evaluate the brain damage of hypoxic ischemia accurately.
