Regional Museum and the Forging of Cultural Identity for Minors

As is known to all, China is a multiethnic country.Every ethnic group has its own unique culture. How to establish cultural identity for the public in the multiethnic and multicultural society in order to propel the society to develop harmoniously and stably is one of the hot issues having been addressed by Chinese society for a long term.Minors are in the crucial period of establishing views on life, world and value.Their knowledge acquired from school education, social education and self-learning during this special period will have significant, even decisive influence on their future life.Museum is an irreplaceable and indispensable place to conduct social education. In 2007, during ICOM”S 21st General Conference in Vienne, a notable change of the definition of museum is that education, prior to study and enjoyment, became the primary purpose of museum, which reflects the emphasis on museum”s social responsibility.Being in the multiethnic and multicultural societies, museums should take responsibility to take full advantage of its own specialty and resources to satisfy their public”s needs and desires for multiple and varied identities.Museum education, especially education for minors, is an important approach to achieve the goal of establishing cultural identity. This paper will illustrate the museum education for minors in Shaanxi History Museum, aiming at discussing how to forge the cultural identity for minors by museum resources.
