National Diet Library”s Mission and Objectives 2012-2016 and collaboration with the Asian region:current status and challenges
With the appointment of the new Librarian in April 2012, the National Diet Library (NDL) updated its strategic objectives and introduced Mission and Objectives 2012-2016 (M&O), our mission and the goals to be achieved in about five years, and Strategic Goals, the mid -term, subordinate objectives under the M&O.The collaboration with Asia is pursued under Objective 4: Collaboration and Cooperation.The Kansai-kan of the NDL in Kyoto deserves a special mention in this scheme as it functions as a hub of library cooperation as well as one of the major centers of Asian related collection in Japan in the form of the Asian Resources Room.We intend to promote various projects of region-wide significance in order to contribute to information sharing with linguistically and culturally diverse Asia.Such projects include the development of NDL Search, capable of searching with various Asian, especially Chinese and Korean, languages, mutual visit programs with the national libraries of China and the Republic of Korea, China -Japan-Korea Digital Library Initiative, international projects to align digital libraries, and preservation and conservation activities including information services and training programs for the Asian region that we undertake as the designated IFLA PAC Regional Centre for Asia.
