The history and current state of cultivation of medical oncologists training in Japan

The chemotherapy for cancer in Japan has always been conducted mostly by the surgeons. It was considered subordinate to surgery because of the lack of clinically effective anticancer drugs. Therefore, there were not many physicians in Japan, who are willing to be the specialist of anticancer drug therapy. However, there was a turning point in the beginning of 1980, when the Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare group called ”Cancer collective treatment group” (which later becomes JCOG: Japan Clinical Oncology Group) was established mainly by National Cancer Center.
