Dyeing Silk Fabric with Gromwell-Contemplation on the Extraction of Colorants from Gromwell Using Organic Solvent and the Color Changes According to the PH of Dye Liquor with Their 3D Representation

This study reviewed the dyeing methods of Gromwell described in the Korean ancient writings from the scientific perspective. It aims to find out the features resulting from changes in colorant extraction methods and dyeing methods.According to previous studies, extracting Gromwell”s colorants by water with the room temperature is considered to be impossible.Yet it is undesirable to extract the colorants by water with higher temperatures since degradation of Gromwell” s colorants was induced. To solve problems in colorant extracting, in this study, ethanol was used, the organic solvent, with the room temperature. In the process of dyeing, water is added in a certain ratio to the ethanol solution in which Gromwell”s colorants are dissolved to use it as a dye liquor.Rather than dyeing in the dye liquor with 100% ethanol, adding water to the ethanol makes the dyeing more economic and eco-friendly.Furthermore, the added water makes the dye liquor hydrophilic which is known to facilitate the dyeing process. In this study, the ratios of Gromwell”s colorant solution extracted by ethanol to water were changed in three ways-40 ∶ 60 (v/v) , 60 ∶ 40, and 20 ∶ 80.The temperature was kept at 60℃ at all dyeing process to protect Gromwell”s colorant from degradation in higher temperatures. The color of Gromwell” s colorant is known to change as the pH of the solution changes from acid to neutrality to alkali. In this study, the solution”s PH was changed from 3.1 to 11.3 in order to examine how the color changes according to the solution”s PH.
