China through Italian Eyes: Geo-Historical Themes in the Travel Report by Giovanni Gherardini (late 17th century)
Giovanni Gherardini (1655-1729 ca.),also known as吉拉尔吉尼,热那第尼,杰拉蒂尼,吉拉第尼or切拉蒂尼in Chinese language, was an Italian Baroque painter,active between Italy and France.Born in Modena (Emilia-Romagna Region, Northern Italy) (Campori 1879-1880;Roberti 1900;Corsi 1999, pp.108-109;Corsi 2000), he soon moved to Bologna, where he joined the so-called”Quadratura” school(an artistic approach based on a very high emphasis given to perspective in ceilings and walls frescos), led by A.M.Colonna.
