Continuous Flow Intersection Optimal Timing Model with Pedestrian Phase
Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) mode, one of Unconventional Intersection Design (UID) modes,is designed to improve traffic performance of intersections with heavy left-turn flows.Existing optimal timing models of CFIs,which merely take vehicle traffic flows into account, fail to produce effective timing schemes for those with heavy pedestrian traffic. To deal with the problem, this paper (1) introduces pedestrian crossing phase to CFI mode,(2) improves existing delay and queue model and analyzes signal offsets to optimize it,(3) and puts forward optimal coordinated timing model, including procedure and solving methods, which perfectly applies to the CFIs with pedestrian traffic phases. In the end,a case study proves that competitive timing schemes be produced for the CFI,which reduces delay of vehicle traffic flows effectively on the premise of pedestrian crossing.
