Brachytherapy of Intermediate High Risk Prostate Cancer
For intermediate-and high-risk prostate cancer, brachytherapy is often combined with external beam radiation therapy(EBRT) to supplement the radiation dose to other tissues atrisk, including the seminal vesicles.Combined therapymay increase the risk ofnormal tissue injury comparedwith that associated with the useof either modality alone. Some reports have reportedincreased morbidity after combined brachytherapy and EBRT.In our previous study, we found that Grade 2 rectal bleedingwas significantly correlated with the use of supplemental EBR T and that analysis of the rectal dose-volume histogram(DV-H) for brachytherapy and EBRT was a useful method for predictingthe risk of development of Grade 2 rectal bleeding.Furthermore, we evaluate the predictive value of equivalent uniform doses (EUD) for late rectal toxicity after I-125brachytherapy for prostate cancer.EUD may be amore useful predictive indicator of late rectal toxicity than known post-implant dosimetric parameters.
