Research on the characteristics of SWING phenomenon for single moored FPSO in South China Sea
FPSO is always moored permanently in a certain area by a STP mooring system and plays a dominate role in the production of oil and natural gas in South China Sea.A joint industry project on full scale measurement for Fenjin FPSO, headed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and sponsored by CNOOC, was initiated in October 2007 and lasted for 25 months.A large amount of first-hand valuable data was obtained.During the analysis of FPSO”s motion data, a special phenomenon, named as swing, was discovered.It is found that under some specific circumstances, the FPSO”s heading angle changes greatly within a relative short period, and beyond the normal range of the weather-vane effect.The great change of heading angle may increase the load on the mooring system and endanger the FPSO during the offioading operation.Until now, researches for such kind of phenomenon on FPSO with a STP mooring system are of scarcity.The definition of the swing phenomenon, its characteristics and the mechanisms as well as its threat to the safety of FPSO is in need of research.A statistical analysis is finished in the paper.The data from May to October in 2009 collected during the full scale measurement to finish the statistical analysis for the swing phenomenon, and the numbers of the swing phenomenon happened during this period as well as the lasting time when every swing happens are obtained.In the meantime, according to the wave, wind and current data measured in the project, a fundamental prediction of the cause for the swing phenomenon is provided in the paper.Moreover, the effect of swing phenomenon on the mooring system and the safety of the FPSO are also studied.The tension loads of the mooring lines in one swing phenomenon are analyzed by the non-coupled simulation technique.The characteristics of swing phenomenon of FPSO are summarized finally.
