Global Warming, its Effect on Dormancy of Deciduous Fruit Trees,Risks and Solutions
The expected global warming may affect markedly deciduous fruit growth and production in various locations around the globe.Reduced effective winter chilling may pose new problems in areas that never experienced problems in bud breaking.Understanding the multiple effects of temperature on dormancy development led to development of temperature models. The Dynamic model was found to follow closely the actual effect of temperature on bud dormancy. The best approach to remedy the situation is by breeding towards lower chilling requiring cultivars.Good basis for that work is the cultivars bred in warm countries having low chilling requirements.Other approach is to use dormancy-breaking chemicals oOr physical means on existing cultivars.Various cultural means are described that could reduce the actual chilling requirements of deciduous fruit trees.
