Effects of Silicon on Plant Growth and Antioxidan Enzyme Activities in Leaves of Cucumber Seedlings under NO3-Stress
1 Purpose Cucumber is one of the most important vegetables in the world.Recently,over-utilization of chemical fertilizer has caused secondary salinization in Chinese greenhouse. The excessively accumulated anion in soil of the greenhouse is NO3-.The large accumulation of salt and salt ions might induce other limiting factors of greenhouse cropping system, such as the nutritional disorders, acidification of soil and so on.Silicon (Si) is the second most abundant element on the surface of the earth, yet its role in plant biology has been poorly understood and the attempts to associate Si with metabolic or physiological activities have been inconclusive. At present, salt stress has been shown in some investigations to be mitigated by Si.But most of salt stresses regarded NaCl as means of research, while the effects of silicon on plant growth under excess NO3-was seldomly investigated.
