Analysis of the Ground Coating Adjustment Techniques Used in Medieval and Modern Lacquer Objects Exported from China Based on Cross Sectional Structural Analysis of the Coating Film
This research was carried out focusing on the ground coating adjustment techniques used on two tea chests. These two chests are considered Guangdong lacquer objects, imported from China to Europe in the early Modem era.An examination of the artifacts revealed that all joint surfaces were reinforced with fiber or paper. It was also ascertained that the coating consisted mainly of quartz, anorthoclase, hematite and its altered minerals, suggesting the use of an admixture with hypabyssal rock as a base.In addition, it was found that glue was used as a bonding agent. It is believed that by investigating the spread of ground coating adjustment techniques in China and the impact of these techniques on the production of lacquer objects in Japan, essential information for understanding the exchange of lacquer material culture in East Asia will be obtained.
