The Importance of Comprehensive Strategy for Heritage”s Conservation: an Approach to Preserve the Historical Heritage in Modern Urbanization, a Case Study of ”Old City of Damascus”
The ”Character” of every historic site can”t be defined only by its form and function, but also by its living background as well as the surrounding environment. This paper explains how the weakening of the historic site”s character and its heritage took place in many areas all over the world, particularly the Arabic cities; In general, the deterioration of the site”s character is a because of the destruction caused by users as well as professionals. This could be a result to the absence of a comprehensive conservation strategy for historic sites, as well as the variety of interests of different users. It is fundamental to realize that the site”s character is not limited to certain values such as aesthetic and historic ones, and any kind of interference or perception can either contribute to, or detract from, the ”heritage” of this site. Therefore the attempts to preserve this ” living heritage” should be altered to a sustainable utilization.Accordingly, this paper discusses the phenomenon of the Old City of Damascus ”OCD” as a contemporary city which is surviving today as historic districts within giant fabric of modern metropolis, and tries to find out the elements of a comprehensive strategy to preserve its urban and architectural heritage.
