The Typology of Vigan Houses in the Philippines-A World Heritage Site
The historic Vigan is one of the five World Heritage Sites found in the Philippines. Its inscription in accordance to cultural purposes is based on the following selected criteria that ”exhibits an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within the cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning and landscape design” and ”an outstanding example of a type of building or architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates a significant change in human history”.Its inscription is an acknowledgement of our native artisans who built our ancestral houses as monumental arts or town planning in recognition to commitment of our present generation to preserve our architectural legacy for future generations. The City of Vigan amended the Vigan Conservation Guidelines in Ordinance No.07: Series of 2006.Section 3:”The Typology of Vigan Houses” where the ancestral houses within the City of Vigan have the following types:1) Brick and Wood Type, straight facade ; 2) All Brick Type 3) Brick and Wood with Volada ; 4) American Colonial Period type and 5) Camarin The study focused on the ancestral houses situated within the historical core of Vigan as buffer zone that was built during the Spanish and American colonial periods.Because of time, neglect and rapid urbanization, the present status and physical condition of the ancestral houses are unstable thus decay is visible and threatens its inscription as UNESCO World heritage site. Objectives of the study determined and understood the distinct design characteristics of the five (5) Vigan house typology, to identify the location and percentage of the typology of Vigan houses built during the Spanish and American Colonial periods; to know the existing profiles of Vigan houses; to understand the spatial and distinct function of the typology through space syntax analysis. The profile of Vigan houses will identify the year it was built, lot types, road frontage and orientation; distinguish the lot area ratio and the existing built area in the ground floor, including upper floor spaces like sala (living area), azotea (open balcony) and volada (second floor overhang; to determine the building facade length, facade rhythm and total building height; to find ratio of fenestration sizes and styles of the main door, windows at the ground and second floors including roof and overhang ceiling eaves.Research methods and analysis is a quantitative approach that involves ocular surveys to determine location and typology percentage within the buffer zone.In reference to the existing documentation plans, photo documentation and actual measurement of Vigan houses.Through space syntax analysis, basic plan patterns, functions and spatial layout are shown including the single and double panel doors.Minimum and maximum ratio of space requirements are noted including facade heights, fenestration sizes and styles to understand the nature of the typology of Vigan houses.
