Ethical Symbols in the Design of Dotted Ornaments in the Imperial Palace

  Taking four dotted ornaments in the Imperial Palace for example-Huabiao(ornamental columns erected in front of palaces,tombs,etc.),stone lion,brass censer(an incense burner of bronze)and gold cylinder,the thesis sets out to discuss the ethical connotation in architectural design from the perspective of modeling,decoration and color in the context of palace buildings which emphasize ”rituals”,”unity”,and ”inclusiveness”,represent the unity of heaven and humanity,symbolize the proprieties,and aim to highlight the identity of the occupants.Buildings in the Imperial Palace make use of dragon design,lotus pattern and yellow color to demonstrate imperial stateliness and nobleness,to reveal natural harmony in Chinese architectural design,to spread feudal rulers” awe of heaven and earth,and to express their hope for eternal inheritance.
