Scientific Analysis and Conservation on Ancient Underwater Porcelains Recovered from Nanhai Ⅰ in the South China Sea
Nanhai Ⅰ is a merchant shipwreck which sank in the South China Sea 800 years ago while transporting different kinds of precious of porcelains and metalwork. This 30-meter-long wooden vessel lay in 25-meter depth of water and was covered by fine sediment. Most of the porcelains are disks, bowls, vases, pots. Some of them were covered by thick encrustations. In this job,EDX analysis and Ion Chromatography(IC)were employed to investigate the disease in these porcelains. In order to remove the harmful salts, monitored by Conductivity Meter and Ion Chromatography, still water, alternating hot and cold cleaning was performed.According to the results,an appropriate method about the desalination of porcelain which came out of water at Nanhai Ⅰ shipwreck was selected.
