Efficient Conversion of Carbohydrate into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Levulinic acid Catalyzed by InCl3 in Aqueous Media
The efficient conversion of glucose to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and levulinic acid (LA) were investigated in aqueous media promoted over Lewis acid InCl3.The optimization of reaction conditions were manipulated through reaction temperature,time.The yield of 5-HMF derived from glucose was obtained with 80% in 20 min at 180 oC.The highest yield of LA obtained from 5-HMF hydrolysis was 57% using 3 wt % InCl3.Furthermore,a plausible reaction mechanism for the dehydration of glucose was proposed based on the results.The results show that InCl3 as an active Lewis acid catalyst demonstrated excellent activity in glucose isomerization to fructose and dehydration/rehydration reactions.
